when animals conceive

is there a reason that the national geographic channel thinks that the geenral public is interested in seeing embryonic elephants, dogs, and dolphins ineutero? i'm confused. i've been seeing the advertisements for 'in the womb animals' (check that link out...there's a nifty video) on ngc for about 3 weeks now...and it seems like kind of a big deal for them. not to mention it is taking up about 6 hrs of their schedule for the tenth of december (2 hrs per animal i suppose). the commercial has this freaky-looking mini-elephant twitching about in what i assume is 'the womb' awash in a fleshy pink light with a voice over making comments to the effect of 'look, it's putting it's trunk in it's mouth!'...neat...that's good tv right there. let me be clear that my tv stays pretty much fixed on ngc, the history channel, discovery, or animal planet (that's mainly for owen...he likes to bark at the tv) i am a fool for educational television but after looking over the listings for that day, it appears that i will either be watching 2 hrs of 'extreme makover: home edition' and trying not to cry...that's not a joke...that show is freaking emotional. on time they fixed up this family's house, the father and mother were both completly deaf, the youngest son was blind and autistic, and the older son was a straight 'a' student with no hope (finacially) of ever getting to college. well, the hooked this house up, along with homing devices in the youngest sons pjs so that if he got out of the house, he could be tracked down. so, everybody's all emotional at the 'reveal' and all and my eyes are feeling a bit 'itchy' then some rich guy comes by and gives the older son a $50,000 scholarship to whatever college he chose...i about lost it. all that to say: i'll be trying not to cry rather than watch dolphin zygote. i think that there is some sort of 'american idol' special on as well...if you are into that sort of thing. it's cool if you are...i won't judge you.

and don't get me wrong, i think that it is valid programming for ngc...but they're promoting this thing pretty hard (as hard as anything since their '"the da vinci code" is bollocks' series) and it just doesn't seem like that big a draw...especially being book-ended by 'moon mysteries' and 'killer asteroid.' i guess i am just on the outside of some fetal mammal craze of which i am unaware. i'm sure national geographic has done the research and this is a sure-fire winner. animal-embryo-mania is sweeping the nation...i'm sure i'll be the last one on the bandwaggon just like i was with jams and hypercolor t-shirts.
